Helsinki has two food identities running in parallel — the deep-rooted traditions of Finnish coastal and peasant cooking, and a modern urban scene that has quietly become one of Scandinavia's most interesting. This tour moves through both over 2.5 hours and five stops.

We start at the Pitkäsilta bridge and head straight into Hakaniemi Market Hall, one of Helsinki's most honest food spaces: the ground floor is traditional produce, butchers, and fishmongers; the upper floor is where contemporary food stalls have taken root. The contrast between the two floors happens naturally, without anyone having to explain it.

From there the route moves south through Senate Square — the civic heart of Helsinki, framed by the cathedral and the government palace — before stopping at Fazer Cafe on Kluuvikatu. A Helsinki institution since 1891, this is where the korvapuusti and coffee stop belongs. Coffee culture here is not a trend, it's infrastructure.

The tour ends at the Old Market Hall and Market Square by the South Harbour. Grilled salmon, smoked vendace, sausages cooked outdoors — unpretentious food in front of one of the best views in the city.

At every stop, participants order and pay directly at the venue. Total food costs across the tour run roughly €20–35. This is a tip-based experience — your guide's fee comes from what you choose to leave at the end.

How it works

This is a free tour — there's no fixed price. At the end, each participant contributes what they consider fair based on their experience, typically €15–50 per person as a guideline. Food and drink costs at each stop are separate and paid directly at the venue.

Meeting point is the north end of Pitkäsilta bridge, on the Hakaniemi side — your guide will be wearing a green fleece. Minimum 2 people required to run the tour.
